Audi AG plans to launch a less powerful version of its e-tron electric crossover vehicle next year.
The new e-tron 50 quattro (pictured) will maintain the dual electric motor setup of the recently introduced e-tron 55 quattro. But power will be reduced from 402 hp and 490 lb-ft of torque to 308 hp and 398 lb-ft.
The e-tron 50 also is 1.5 seconds slower, requiring a full 7 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 kph (62 mph).
Audi also is equipping the e-tron 50 with a lower capacity 71-kWh lithium-ion battery that the company says will provide a 186-mile driving range on the WLTP test cycle. By comparison, the e-tron 55 with a 95-kWh battery is rated at 259 miles.
The e-tron 55 is compatible with 150-kW chargers, but the new variant can accommodate chargers no more powerful than 120 kW. Audi says the smaller battery still can be replenished to 80% capacity in about 30 minutes.
The e-tron 50 is about 260 lbs lighter than its more powerful counterpart. Pricing is expected to start about $63,000, or $12,000 less than the e-tron 55.
