Berlin Ordered to Impose Partial Ban on Diesels

A German court has ruled that Berlin must ban older diesel-powered vehicles on some of its roads next spring.
The ruling requires bans on 11 stretches of main roadway beginning next March. The decision also orders the city to study whether similar limits should be applied to an additional 117 sections representing 15 km of urban roadway.
The order applies to vehicles with emission ratings of Euro 5 or less. An estimated 8.6 million such vehicles currently are in operation across Germany.
The Berlin ruling is a result of a lawsuit by environmental group Deutsche Umwelthilfe. DUH won a similar order in Frankfurt last month.
