BMW Doubles Battery Capacity at U.S. Plant

BMW AG’s giant SUV factory in Spartanburg, S.C., has doubled capacity to make batteries for its electrified models.
The fourth-generation lithium-ion batteries are used in the plug-in hybrid variant of BMW’s X5 crossover vehicle (pictured) produced at Spartanburg.
BMW will begin making a next-generation X5 hybrid in August and launch a plug-in hybrid variant of the X3 in December.
BMW says more than 120 employees will work on the battery line by year-end. An additional 225 workers are being trained for EV production.
The plant has produced more than 45,000 batteries since such production started there in 2015. BMW also makes batteries for electrified vehicles in Dingolfing, Germany, and Shenyang, China. The latter, a joint venture operated with Brilliance China Automotive, was expanded last year.
