BMW AG has agreed to pay an €8.5 million ($9.7 million) fine in Germany for installing the wrong emission control software in 8,000 diesel-powered cars.
The error allowed affected vehicles to emit more nitrogen oxides under real-world operating condition than they did in laboratory certification tests, Reuters reports.
Prosecutors, who opened an investigation into the error nearly a year ago, describe the mistake as a lapse in management oversight. The probe originally targeted 11,400 BMW 750d large sedans and M550d wagons.
