BMW Launches Diesel Recall in U.S.

BMW AG has begun recalling 44,400 diesel-powered cars in the U.S. to fix an exhaust gas recirculation system flaw that could cause an engine fire.
The callback is part of a global recall announced in October of some 1.6 million diesels worldwide. The U.S. campaign targets certain 2013-2018 model 3 Series sedans and wagons, 5 Series sedans, 7 Series sedans, and X3 and X5 crossover vehicles.
Affected cars are fitted with an EGR intercooler that could leak. BMW says the combination of ethylene glycol coolant and hot soot particles may ignite and melt the engine’s intake manifold. Dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler and/or intake manifold as needed.
The issue gained nationwide attention in South Korea at the beginning of the year as authorities reported more than 40 engine fires blamed on the defect. The publicity prompted an owners’ lawsuit and an investigation by Korea’s transport ministry.
