BMW Launches Its First Over-the-Air Updates

BMW AG has begun offering over-the-air software updates in select vehicles.
The first upgrade relates to the carmaker’s new Personal Assistant technology that was launched this year. Bimmer owners now will be able to install updates remotely when they are available, without having to visit a dealership.
Subsequent upgrades will allow customers to add vehicle functions from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store and activate them in their vehicles. This includes functions such as adaptive cruise control and side collision protection, as well as unspecified vehicle-specific content, according to BMW.
Depending on vehicle configuration, owners will be able to use the new Remote Software Upgrade to activate additional functions from their home computer, smartphone or inside the car itself. A vehicle must be equipped with BMW’s 7.0 operating platform to access over-the-air updates.
