New-car sales in Italy fell 8% to 164,900 units in January, according to the government’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The ministry’s figures show that a 4% gain in retail sales to individual buyers was offset by declines in fleet sales to rental agencies and companies. Demand for diesels plunged 31% to 68,100 units, while sales of gasoline-fueled cars grew 28% to 74,700.
Among manufacturers, market leader Fiat Chrysler Automobiles saw volume drop 22% last month. Year-on-year sales rose 4% for PSA Group and 11% for Volkswagen Group. BMW and Daimler each posted a 1% gain.
