The 5G Automotive Assn. (5GAA) demonstrated a variety of connected vehicle technologies this week in Berlin, using a mix of cellular-based and dedicated short-range communication systems.

In some tests, C-V2X and DSRC were used in tandem, which the group said improved overall communication speed, performance and reliability. Applications included traffic light timing alerts, “edge-computing” and remote vehicle operation.

Motorists also were warned about changing road and traffic conditions based on information from lead vehicles about such factors as abrupt braking, tire pressure and the use of windshield wipers.

Founded in 2016, 5GAA has more than three dozen members. Among those participating in the Berlin program were BMW, Daimler, Ford and Jaguar Land Rover, along with technology specialists Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer Institutes FOKUS, Huawei, Nokia, Qualcomm and Vodafone.
