Cummins Teams with TM4 on Plug-In Hybrid for Large Buses
Cummins Inc. and TM4 Inc. are developing a plug-in hybrid powertrain system for Class 7/8 transit buses that they claim can reduce fuel consumption by more than 50% over current hybrid buses.

Cummins Inc. and TM4 Inc. are developing a plug-in hybrid powertrain system for Class 7/8 transit buses that they claim can reduce fuel consumption by more than 50% over current hybrid buses.
The partners are targeting a 35-km (22-mile) electric driving range for the powertrain. Using a 450-kW fast-charging system, the battery can be fully replenished in less than five minutes, TM4 estimates.
The architecture will include an integrated range extender and advanced vehicle controls. Cummins will work to optimize the engine to manage the charge level of the battery pack.
The companies will unveil a prototype of the plug-in hybrid system next week in Montreal during the UITP conference on sustainable transportation.
TM4 is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hydro-Quebec that supplies electric motors, generators, power electronics and control systems for passenger, commercial and industrial vehicles. The company equipped systems on 5,000 electrified buses in China last year.
