Daimler AG has begun construction of a large battery plant seven miles from its car and SUV assembly complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The new facility will supply batteries for future Mercedes-Benz electric crossover vehicles assembled in Tuscaloosa and sold globally under the EQ brand. Daimler said last year it would invest $1 billion to add batterymaking capacity and prepare the assembly plant to make all-electric SUV/crossovers.

Daimler is preparing eight locations worldwide to make batteries for its plug-in hybrid and all-electric models. The other facilities are in Germany (Kamenz, Sindelfingen and Stuttgart), China (Beijing) and Thailand (Bangkok).

The company expects to offer at least one electrified version of all its passenger vehicle models by 2022.
