Daimler AG has launched production of Mercedes-Benz E-Class midsize sedans at a new factory north of Moscow.
The facility is the first new foreign-owned auto plant to open in Russia in many years. Daimler says the factory will perform welding, water-soluble painting, assembly and quality inspection operations.
In 2018, Mercedes sales in Russia rose 3% to 37,800 units, according to the Moscow- based Assn. of European Businesses.
Russia’s overall light-vehicle market climbed to a record 2.94 million units in 2012. But economic sanctions shrank the market to 1.42 million by 2016. Sales have revived since then, rising 13% to 1.80 million last year.
