Daimler AG’s Car2Go car-sharing unit has suspended operations in Chicago after more than 100 of the service’s fleet were stolen this week.

Daimler says some of the vehicles were rented fraudulently and used during other crimes. But the carmaker maintains Car2Go’s app wasn’t hacked, nor was any customer’s personal information compromised.

Some of the stolen cars already have been recovered by police, and as many as 16 people are in custody, according to media reports.

Car2go operates some 14,000 vehicles in 25 locations in North America, Europe and Asia. The Chicago fleet consist of Smart ForTwo city cars and Mercedes-Benz CLA sport sedans and GLA crossover vehicles.

Daimler is in the process of merging Car2Go and its other ride-hailing, parking and electric car-charging services with those of rival BMW AG. The partners are investing more than €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in the 50:50 joint venture.
