Daimler AG plans to supply some of its GLC small crossover vehicles to the U.S. from the company’s assembly plant in Pune, India, Automotive News reports.
The first batch of “several thousand” GLCs will arrive in October, AN says. Daimler also will continue to supply the American market with units made in its factory in Bremen, Germany.
Daimler has no plan to build the GLC (pictured) at its Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Tuscaloosa, Ala., according to the newspaper That facility currently makes C-Class sedans and three SUV/crossover models: the large GLS and midsize GLE and its coupelike variant.
AN points out that sourcing vehicles from India would aid the profitability of the Pune plant while enabling Daimler to skirt threatened U.S. import tariffs on vehicles made in Europe.
