Denso to Expand Autonomous Car Testing Capabilities in Japan

Denso Corp. is building a proving ground and prototype complex adjacent to the Haneda Airport outside Tokyo.
The facility is expected to be completed by mid-2020 and eventually will employ about 200 people. The project is part of an initiative to transform unused areas of the airport grounds into a technical hub and mixed-use cultural facilities.
Japan has designated the Haneda area as a national strategic special zone that allows testing of autonomous vehicles and emerging mobility services on public roads.
The proving grounds and prototype facility will support the new research and development center Denso announced in January. That facility will be located within a business park at Tokyo’s Shinagawa train station complex.
In August, Denso formed a joint venture to develop software for automated driving systems with Advic, Aisin Seiki and Jtekt. Denso holds a 65% stake in the venture. The three companies are partly owned by Toyota.
