Carmakers in Europe face a new wrinkle in the WLTP test for tailpipe emissions that took effect last September: tougher controls on evaporative emissions.
Manufacturers says the new evaporative test that will apply to cars registered from this coming September will trigger a fresh round of recertification tests under the WLTP (worldwide harmonized light vehicle test).
Several producers, notably Volkswagen Group, had to suspend sales of several popular models late last year as they scrambled to satisfy the WLTP protocol.
VW says it’s possible that some of its models will be delayed again when the evaporative testing begins later this year. Specs for the test weren’t finalized until November.
