Ford Patents Smartphone Controls for Semi-Autonomous Cars
Ford Motor Co. has received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that would allow users to steer an automated vehicle via their smartphone or other handheld electronic device.

Ford Motor Co. has received a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that would allow users to steer an automated vehicle via their smartphone or other handheld electronic device.
Two non-autonomous steering modes are described. Both use wireless communication to synchronize a vehicle’s steering wheel angle to inputs from the phone.
One mode taps into a device’s gyroscope and accelerometer to allow users to steer by tilting it in the direction they want to turn—similar to handheld controllers for race car games.
In the other mode, users control the vehicle by moving a virtual steering wheel on the phone’s touchscreen.
