Ford Motor Co. is hiring 1,200 people to add a third production shift at its assembly plant outside Pretoria, South Africa, Reuters reports.
The factory currently employs 4,300 people to make about 500 vehicles per day. The expansion will enable the facility to build 168,000 vehicles per year.
The 3 billion-rand ($214 million) project also will hike production at Ford’s engine plant in Port Elizabeth. That facility currently makes 120,000 diesels per year for the Silverton plant and exports 130,000 engines annually to China, Europe and North America.
Ford says the new shift at Silverton will be added next month to build Ford’s new Ranger pickup truck, Ranger Raptor sport truck and Everest SUV. All three models ride on the same platform.
