France, Germany Launch Battery Cell Alliance

French battery maker Saft Groupe SA and carmaker PSA Group, including its Opel unit in Germany, aim to form a battery cell consortium to operate in both countries.
France and Germany also have asked the European Commission to approve a scheme to allow the two governments to provide state subsidies to the cross-border partnership, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports.
FAZ didn’t indicate the amount of the intended government support. But the newspaper says the two countries have allocated a combined €1.7 billion ($1.9 billion) to support alliances that would bolster Europe’s ability to supply batteries for local producer rather than rely on Asian manufacturers.
The alliance intends to retool an Opel factory in Kaiserslautern to make battery cells, according to the report.
