General Motors Co. is developing a rugged, fuel cell-powered version of its Chevrolet Silverado fullsize pickup truck for military applications.
The company’s new military unit, which was created last year, released a short video this week that features a rendering of the Silverado ZH2 concept model. GM Defense also displayed the concept’s chassis last month at a U.S. Army conference.
The truck is powered by a next-generation fuel cell and advanced lithium ion battery that provides a 400-mile driving range. Other features include a "race-proven multimatic” suspension to help traverse rugged off-road conditions.
The concept’s base design appears to mimic that of GM's next-generation heavy-duty pickups, which are due to bow next year.
GM has developed several other military-related concept vehicles in recent years. This includes the fuel cell-powered Chevy Colorado ZH2 pickup, which the U.S. Army has been testing for about 18 months.
