GM to Add EV Production at Michigan Plant

General Motors Co. confirms media reports that it will invest $300 million to prepare its assembly plant in Orion Township, Mich., to make an all-new Chevrolet electric vehicle.
The program will create 700 jobs at the underutilized factory, which currently employs 1,000 people to make the battery-powered Chevy Bolt EV. The upcoming model will use an updated version of the Bolt’s platform.
GM announced the Orion plant expansion after being lambasted for the second time by President Donald Trump for closing its assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, and eliminating 1,500 jobs there. That facility had been operating at only 33% of capacity.
GM emphasizes that it has 2,700 openings at other U.S. plants for hourly jobs. The company says it so far has relocated 1,100 employees affected by shutdowns announced last November that affect four assembly plants in North America and two components factories in Maryland and Michigan.
