Honda Motor Co. will announced tomorrow that it intends to shut down its assembly plant in Swindon, England in 2022, sources tell the U.K.’s Sky News television network.
Sky News says the closure is being driven by Honda’s desire to maintain employment and production levels at its home plants in Japan and is unrelated to the U.K.’s plan to quit the European Union next month.
Swindon current makes CR-V small vehicles, most of them exported to Europe, and five-door Civic hatchbacks, most of them shipped to Europe and the U.S.
Last year Honda built about 160,000 vehicles at Swindon. The company sold a total of 135,600 cars in Europe, including models shipped directly from Japan, according to trade group ACEA.
