Hyundai Motor Co. will begin Canadian sales of its fuel cell-powered Nexo crossover vehicle this month in Vancouver.

The all-new model was launched last year in South Korea and Europe, before bowing earlier this year in California. The vehicle succeeds Hyundai’s Tucson fuel cell vehicle.

In Canada, the Nexo will be available at select Hyundai dealerships. Modo, a Vancouver-based carsharing service, also is adding two Nexos to its fleet this spring. Consumers can test drive the Nexo at this week’s Vancouver auto show.

Vancouver currently has one public hydrogen refueling station. Hyundai notes that fuel cell vehicles have a longer driving range than pure electric vehicles and aren’t as susceptible to performance degradation in cold weather. Another advantage: the Nexo can be fully refueled in as little as five minutes.

In the U.S., the Nexo starts at just over $58,000. The price includes a free year of maintenance and hydrogen fueling cars worth as much as $13,000.
