Hyundai Motor Co.’s fuel cell-powered Nexo crossover vehicle earned a top five-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Program.

The Nexo, which is the first fuel cell vehicle tested under the European program, received a 94% score for adult occupant safety. The organization, which praised the Nexo for its automatic emergency braking system, says the results should “dispel concerns” about potential dangers of hydrogen fuel cell cars involved in crashes.

Launched this summer in select global markets, the Nexo succeeds Hyundai’s first-generation fuel cell vehicle, the Tucson FCEV crossover vehicle. The all-new car can travel about 600 km (370 miles) per fill-up—about 25% greater than the range of the Tucson FCEV.

The Lexus ES hybrid car, Mazda6 sedan and Mercedes-Benz A-Class small car also received five-star ratings in the latest Euro NCAP tests. The Mazda6’s rating of 95% was the second-highest posted this year, trailing only the Volvo XC40’s score of 97%.
