Hyundai Motor Co. has completed South Korea’s first public highway test of a large truck fitted with a self-driving system.
Hyundai’s Xcient 40-ton test truck and semi-trailer covered about 40 km (25 miles) between Uiwang and Incheon. The company says the vehicle is the first heavy-duty truck in Korea to be awarded a temporary autonomous driving permit.
The truck’s Level 3 autonomous-driving technology is able to steer, maneuver through traffic and accelerate and decelerate, but it sometimes requires a human driver. Hyundai says it expects to reach Level 4 capabilities, which expands the vehicle’s ability to handle situations without human intervention.
The test route included heavy traffic, tunnels, full stops and lane-changing traffic. Hyundai equipped the truck with three front and side/rear cameras, 2 front and rear radars, three front and side lidar and hitch-angle sensors to monitor the coupler between the cab and trailer.
