China’s Tianjin Lishen Battery Co. has signed a preliminary deal to supply batteries for electric cars made in the $2 billion factory Tesla inc. is building in Shanghai, Reuters reports.
Sources tell the news service that the two companies haven’t yet determined the size and quantity of the order. Tesla CEO Elon Musk aims to begin limited assembly of Model 3 electric sedans at the Shanghai factory by year-end.
When Musk announced plans for the plant in November, he said the facility would use multiple battery cell manufacturers.
Panasonic Corp. has been Tesla’s exclusive battery partner for the carmaker’s home plant in Fremont, Calif., and a major investor in Tesla’s “Gigafactory” battery plant outside Reno, Nev.
