Lyft Inc. is releasing research data gathered from self-driving vehicle sensors and mapping systems.
The data set contains 55,000 3D frames of footage, which Lyft says makes it the largest public collection of such information. The material was gathered from cameras, radar, lidar and high-definition maps used in Lyft Level 5 research cars over the last two years.
By sharing the information, Lyft aims to accelerate innovation and spur broader collaboration between carmakers, tech companies and academia.
The ride-hailing company, which expects most of its fleet to be driverless in coming years, has partnered with Aptiv, General Motors, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover and Waymo on the technology. Lyft estimates that its operating costs can be slashed 60% by switching to autonomous vehicles.
