As part of a new promotional campaign, ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. is offering free horse-drawn covered wagon rides this week in downtown Portland to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Oregon Trail.

The fifteen-minute rides start in front of the Oregon Historical Society and pass by several landmarks and historic buildings. Tour guides will accompany riders, who will receive a $10 ride credit and commemorative memento at the end of the trip.

The 2,170-mile Oregon Trail ran from the Mississippi River through territory that became Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming and Idaho into the Oregon valleys. More than 400,000 settlers traversed the route in the mid- to late-1800s until the transcontinental railroad made it obsolete.
