Nissan Plans Assembly Plant in Algeria

Nissan Motor Co. is partnering with Algerian conglomerate and local Nissan distributor Groupe Hasnaoui to build cars and light commercial vehicles for the African market.
The partners will launch their joint venture with a combined investment of $160 million. They aim to open an assembly plant in Algeria with capacity to make 63,500 vehicles per year.
The companies say the facility will be set up to produce multiple models and is likely to create 1,800 jobs. But they didn’t say where the factory will be erected or when it will begin production.
The new factory will hike Nissan’s annual vehicle-making capacity in Africa to 200,000 units. The company already operates assembly plants in Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.
Algeria is likely to become Africa’s second-largest car market, after South Africa, in two years. The government has targeted domestic production of 500,000 cars per year.
