Nissan Motor Co. is shifting to local production of batteries and motors in China for electric cars made by its venture with Dongfeng Motor Group.

The venture began building the Sylphy Zero Emission car in August, using imported powertrain components. But The Nikkei says the venture will now make those items in-house.

Nissan plans to spend 60 billion yuan ($8.6 billion) by 2022 to introduce at least 40 new models in China through the Dongfeng, Infiniti, Nissan and Venucia brands. The company says half the new vehicles will be equipped with hybrid or all-electric powertrains.
