Polestar, Volvo Car Corp.’s electric performance sub-brand, says it will offer a subscription option for customers when it launches sales in North America in 2020.

Polestar’s first model, the 600-hp hybrid Polar 1 sport coupe (pictured), was unveiled last October. The $155,000 car will go into production next summer. Volvo says the first year’s output, including 200 units to the U.S., is already sold out.

The all-electric Polestar 2, which Volvo describes as a direct competitor to Tesla Inc.’s Model 3 EV, will be publicly unveiled early next year. That car will go into production in early 2020.

Polestar will showcase its cars through franchised “Polestar Space” outlets that promise no-pressure, product-oriented experts, test drives and pickup/delivery services for customers. The company expects to open 60 of the “retail labs” worldwide by mid-2020.
