Report: VW May Retool Two More German Factories to Make EVs

Volkswagen AG’s scheduled strategy review on Nov. 16 reportedly will include plans to add electric car production at two more assembly plants in Germany.
The scheme would retool VW’s factories in Hanover (pictured) and Emden, according to Handelsblatt. VW has not commented.
Emden currently produces the slow-selling VW brand Passat midsize car, which Handelsbatt predicts will soon go out of production. Hanover makes light commercial vans and electric variants of its Amarok compact pickup truck, Tiguan small crossover vehicle and Crafter panel van.
VW is preparing to launch its upcoming the all-electric I.D. Neo hatchback in Zwickau, Germany, a year from now. The facility is undergoing a €1.2 billion ($1.4 billion) overhaul to prepare for EV production.
The I.D. car will be the first of 27 battery-powered models under the I.D. sub-brand to be launched through the group’s Audi, SEAT, Skoda and VW brands by 2022. All the vehicles will ride on VW’s new MEB (modular electric toolkit) platform.
