Rivian Files Patent for Removable Auxiliary Battery
Plymouth, Mich.-based electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive LLC has filed a U.S. patent for a range-extending, removable auxiliary battery that could be stored in the pickup bed of its upcoming R1T EV.

Plymouth, Mich.-based electric vehicle startup Rivian Automotive LLC has filed a U.S. patent for a range-extending, removable auxiliary battery that could be stored in the pickup bed of its upcoming R1T EV.
The auxiliary module would plug into a pair of electrical connectors mounted at the front of the pickup bed. The system would include an integrated cooling system and would automatically adjust various vehicle settings—reflecting the added weight and extended driving range—when the battery is plugged in, according to the patent.
Rivian aims to launch the R1T in 2020, which will be followed a year later by the R1S SUV variant. The carmaker says the vehicles will have a driving range of 400 miles. Both models will ride on the company’s “skateboard” platform and be produced at the former Mitsubishi Motor Corp. factory in Normal, Ill.
