Schaeffler Forms By-Wire Joint Venture

Schaeffler AG and Paravan GmbH have formed a joint venture to develop and commercialize drive-by-wire electric control systems for autonomous vehicles.
Schaeffler will own 90% of the new company, called Schaeffler Paravan Technologie GmbH. Schaeffler, Paravan and the joint venture are all based in Germany.
The new company is acquiring Paravan’s “Space Drive” system. Paravan developed the technology, which allows steering, throttle and braking functions to be operated electronically without mechanical links to the wheels, to make it easier for people with disabilities to operate vehicles.
Schaeffler’s contributions to the venture will include its Mover rolling chassis technology (pictured) for electric vehicles. The supplier says the modular platform, which it unveiled earlier this year, can be used for various vehicle body types.
Paravan founder Roland Arnold will serve as CEO of the joint venture. Dirk Kesselgruber, who heads Schaeffler’s Chassis Systems business, and a yet-to-be-named Schaeffler executive, also will be on Schaeffler Paravan management team.RELATED CONTENT
