South Korean battery maker SK Innovation Co. is erecting a €335 million ($376 million) factory in Poland to produce battery separators.
The company will break ground on the 2.9 million-sq-ft site in the third quarter. Mass production is expected to start by late 2021.
Located in Wojewodztwo Slaskie, Poland, the new facility and a previously announced one due to open in China next year will more than triple SKI’s annual capacity for lithium-ion battery separators to 12.9 billion sq ft.
The Poland facility will produce traditional lithium-ion separators and new ceramic-coated units. The latter use thinner films and are less prone to high-temperature shrinkage, according to SKI.
