Four members of the Toyota Motor group intend to pool their resources to integrate autonomous-vehicle systems with artificial intelligence controls, The Nikkei reports.
Denso Corp. is expected to hold a majority stake in the unit, whose other members are Advic (wireless transmitters), Aisin Seiki (powertrain and electronics) and Jtekt (steering and driveline systems).
The new group, which is likely to launch next year, is being formed to better compete with such industry giants as Robert Bosch GmbH, according to The Nikkei. It says the unit will focus on technologies for Toyota but also aim to pitch its capabilities to markets in China, Europe and the U.S., according to The Nikkei.
Toyota plans to introduce its first semi-autonomous driving system in its Lexus luxury brand by about 2020.
