Toyota to Supply Fuel Cell Tech to Portuguese Bus Firm

Portuguese busmaker Caetanobus SA is partnering with Toyota Motor Corp. to develop and test fuel cell-powered city buses.
Under the agreement, Toyota will supply fuel cell stacks, hydrogen tanks and other components to Caetanobus. The Portuguese company plans to begin producing fuel cell buses by the end of 2019.
Caetanobus initially will use the buses as demonstration vehicles in various European cities. The partners say fuel cell buses offer several advantages over battery-electric buses, including a longer driving range and shorter refueling/charging times.
Toyota also is developing its own fuel cell bus. The carmaker aims to put at least 100 such vehicles into operation in Japan before the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
