Toyota Motor Corp. has released the sixth version of its Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) virtual crash dummy software.

THUMS 6 integrates the capabilities of the previous systems to allow researchers to analyze changes in pre-collision occupant posture (braced or relaxed) and injuries sustained at the point of collision. In the past, researchers had to conduct separate tests with THUMS 4 and 5 software.

THUMS Version 4 analyzes injuries sustained to bones and internal organs at the point of collision. Introduced in 2015, THUMS 5 simulates changes in occupant posture by considering pre-collision muscular states.

THUMS 6 software features internal organ modeling and a new muscle model that simulates a variety of occupant postures. Toyota says such testing is critical for emerging autonomous vehicle systems, which likely will lead to more out-of-position drivers in relaxed positions.
