Uber Technologies Inc. says it laid off off 400 of its 1,200 global marketing staff yesterday to cut costs and simplify operations, The New York Times reports.

The reduction follows a broader restructuring launched last month that is combining Uber’s communications, marketing and policy groups. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi promoted Jill Hazelbaker in early June to lead the company’s public affairs and marketing operations.
One of her objectives will be to create a more consistent branding message across Uber’s customers, products and operating regions.
Khosrowshahi told Uber staffers yesterday that many of the company’s teams have grown too big and were beginning to overlap in their work.
