Uber Technologies Inc. says it will spend more than $150 million over five years to establish an autonomous-car development center in Toronto.
The program will include opening a new office next year and a major staff expansion to more than 500 people by 2023. The ride-hailing service set up a nine-member lab in the city last year to develop automotive-related artificial intelligence software.
Uber is considered to be lagging its competitors in autonomous-driving expertise. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is eager to accelerate the company’s self-driving-vehicle capabilities, in part through partnerships.
Uber shut down much of its development work in that area after one of its cars killed a pedestrian while in autonomous test mode. Khosrowshahi has said Uber will resume testing on public roads by the end of this year.
