Canada’s Unifor union hopes for a decision by the end of next week about a plan to save some jobs at the assembly plant General Motors Co. is closing in Oshawa, Ont.
GM announced in November that it will shut down Oshawa and two U.S. assembly plants—Lordstown (Ohio) and Hamtramck (Mich.)—by the end of this year. The union submitted its proposal last month, Automotive News reports.
Oshawa makes Cadillac XTS sedans and Chevrolet Impala large sedans, neither of which is selling well. AN notes that the plant also supplies stampings to the Hamtramck facility, which GM now plans to operate through next year.
Colin James, president of the Unifor local that represents the plant, hints that the union’s proposal would save jobs in Oshawa’s stamping operations. James tells AN that Unifor also is looking for ways that Oshawa could provide stampings for other GM plants beyond 2020.
