There are more than 20,000 charging stations with nearly 69,000 connectors for plug-in hybrid and full-electric vehicles available in the U.S., according to a Dept. of Energy analysis in May.
Nearly 11,000 of the connectors are direct-current devices, which DOE says can provide as much as 20 miles of range per 20 minutes of charging. The other connectors are Level 2 devices that require one hour of charging to deliver 10-20 miles of range.
California accounts for one-third of the U.S. total with more than 22,600 connectors. Another 18 states each have between 1,000 and 3,400 connectors—including Michigan’s 1,300. Alaska has the fewest with just 26 connectors, followed by North Dakota (36) and South Dakota (94).
The DOE’s tally comprises both public and non-residential private charging units. A connector refers to a single charge point.
