Volvo Car Corp. will begin construction later this year of a technician training center near its new $1.1 billion assembly plant in Ridgeville, S.C.
The company announced plans for the facility, called Volvo Cars University, in April. The center will train dealership service and repair personnel. Katarina Fjording, formerly head of purchasing and manufacturing for Volvo’s U.S. unit, will run the facility.
The company has offered no details about the center, which it announced four months ago. But it emphasized that it needs a formal training facility because its current models all were redesigned within the past three years. More important, Volvo is expanding its use of such technologies as hybrid and all-electric powertrains, connectivity, advanced driver aids and semi-autonomous driving systems.
