VW Confirms Plan to Convert Two Factories to Make EVs

Volkswagen AG confirms it will retool its assembly plants in Emden and Hanover, Germany, to make electric vehicles four years from now.
Doing so will create an “e-mobility” hub in northwestern Germany to complement the company’s EV production center in southeastern Zwickau. Handelsblatt reported on the impending plant overhauls last week.
VW says Emden will begin building EVs in 2022. Hanover, which also will continue to make conventionally powered vehicles, is expected to launch the all-electric I.D. Buzz microbus at about the same time. The company’s supervisory board will finalize vehicle program assignments on Friday.
The step-by-step reallocation of production will enable VW to guarantee worker jobs at both facilities through 2027, according to the carmaker.
