Volkswagen AG and Microsoft Corp. have announced a strategic partnership to develop a comprehensive “industrial automotive cloud” for all future VW digital services and mobility offerings.

The new Volkswagen Automotive Cloud will use Microsoft’s Azure platform, services and internet-of-things capabilities. The system will support the VW brand and absorb the carmaker’s group-wide cloud platform, known as One Digital Platform.

As part of the initiative, VW plans to open an automotive cloud development office—with as many as 300 engineers—in North America near Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Wash. Microsoft will provide hands-on support, including consulting and human resources expertise for the office.

VW expects more than 5 million new Volkswagen-badged vehicles per year will be fully connected with IoT cloud capability by 2020. This includes the previously announced “Volkswagen We” digital ecosystem for various telematics, mobility and customer services.
