Volkswagen AG plans to add a large SUV to its new ID electric vehicle sub-brand, Autocar reports.
The U.K. publication says the new model—known internally as the ID Lounge—will be unveiled in concept form at next April’s Shanghai auto show. The luxury seven-seater is expected to be launched in 2022.
As with other planned ID models, the Lounge will be based on VW’s modular MEB architecture (left) for electric vehicles. The vehicle will be about the same size as the latest-generation Touareg crossover with a 130-inch wheelbase, according to Autocar.
The electric drivetrain is expected to be similar to that used in the concept version of the upcoming ID Buzz van. That vehicle is equipped with two electric motors that deliver a combined output of about 370 hp, along with a 111-kWh lithium-ion battery that provides an estimated driving range of 600 km (372 miles).
VW’s first ID-badged model, an unnamed hatchback, is due in 2020. This will be followed by the Crozz crossover, Buzz microbus and Vizzion sedan. A cargo van variant of the Buzz also is in the works.

Ford Copies Nature
As Nature (yes, capital N Nature) has done a pretty good job of designing things, it is somewhat surprising that Man (ditto) doesn’t follow Nature’s lead more often when it comes to designing objects.
