VW to Launch “Smart City” Initiative in China

Volkswagen AG and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC Motor) have signed an agreement with the government of Hefei, China, to test next-generation vehicle technologies as part of a “smart city” initiative.
The project builds on VW and JAC’s plans to produce electric vehicles at a $750 million plant in Hefei that’s due to open in 2021. The factory will make the SEAT-branded Sol E20X small crossover vehicle that rides on a co-developed EV platform.
The initial focus of the smart city partnership will be on self-driving taxis. Connected vehicle systems and ride-hailing and car-sharing services also will be explored. About 8 million people live in Hefei.
