ZF Friedrichshafen AG will supply 8-speed automatic transmissions to Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles NV for use in conventional and hybrid-electric vehicles.

ZF says the multi-year contract is its second-largest ever, after a deal announced earlier this year with BMW AG for the same transmission. The BMW agreement is valued in the double-digit-billion-euro range over the life of the contract.

ZF will begin production for FCA in 2022 at the supplier’s plant in Saarbrueken, Germany. Output at ZF plants in China and the U.S. will ramp up later.

The new 8-speed transmission can be installed in almost any vehicle with a front-longitudinal drive configuration, according to ZF. The transmissions can be used in rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles.
